Meta Introduces AI Mode Search on Facebook Using Public Posts Across Its Apps

Published by Venkatraman Chandrasekaran |Marketing AI

Meta has introduced a new AI-powered search experience on Facebook called AI Mode, giving users a way to ask questions and receive answers based on public content shared across Meta’s apps.

The feature was announced on June 15, 2026, as part of a broader set of AI updates for Facebook. Meta said AI Mode is designed to give users answers “rooted in the culture, opinions, and recommendations” people publicly share across its platforms, instead of showing only a standard list of links.

AI Mode Brings Conversational Search to Facebook

AI Mode is a new search tab inside Facebook that uses Meta AI to answer user questions directly.

Instead of typing a query and browsing through multiple results, users can ask questions in natural language and receive an AI-generated response. Meta said the answers are grounded in what people are publicly saying across its apps, including content from Groups and Reels.

This marks a shift in how Facebook search works. The product is moving beyond keyword-based discovery and toward a conversational search experience that summarizes public discussions, recommendations, and opinions.

Public Groups and Reels Become Search Inputs

Meta said AI Mode uses publicly shared content from across its apps to produce answers. The company specifically referenced Groups and Reels as examples of places where public conversations and recommendations can inform responses.

For Facebook, this is important because Groups have long been one of the platform’s strongest sources of community discussion. Reels, meanwhile, give Meta a short-form video surface where user opinions, trends, product mentions, creator content, and cultural signals can appear.

By bringing these public signals into AI Mode, Meta is trying to make Facebook search feel more like a discovery engine based on real user activity rather than a directory of profiles, pages, or links.

Meta AI and Muse Spark Power the New Search Experience

Meta said AI Mode is powered by Meta AI and its Muse Spark model. Muse Spark was introduced by Meta earlier in 2026 as one of the models behind its AI assistant experience.

In the Facebook announcement, Meta positioned AI Mode as another place where Meta AI is appearing inside the company’s existing apps. The company said the assistant is available while users are searching or exploring content, allowing them to go deeper into a topic without leaving the Facebook experience.

The feature also allows follow-up questions, giving users a more interactive way to refine a search or continue exploring a subject.

AI Search Moves Facebook Closer to Answer-Based Discovery

The launch reflects a broader change happening across digital platforms. Search is increasingly moving from lists of links to AI-generated answers.

For Facebook, this means users may not need to click through several posts, pages, or groups to understand a topic. AI Mode can summarize what people are publicly discussing and present that information inside the search experience.

This also changes how public content may be discovered. Posts, Reels, and group discussions that were previously found through scrolling or direct search could now become part of AI-generated answers.

Creative AI Tools Launch Alongside AI Mode

AI Mode was not the only AI feature announced by Meta. The company also introduced new AI-powered tools for creating and sharing photos and videos on Facebook.

Meta said it is adding new collage cutout templates and transition effects for video montages through camera roll sharing suggestions. The company also said these camera roll suggestions remain opt-in and can be turned off at any time.

Facebook is also adding AI photo presets that allow users to change clothing, hair, and accessories. Meta gave the example of sports fans using AI editing to virtually wear a team jersey through Stories or by restyling their profile picture.

Facebook Search Becomes More Social and AI-Generated

AI Mode shows how Meta is trying to make Facebook search more social, conversational, and AI-generated at the same time.

The feature uses public posts and conversations as source material, which gives Meta a different search asset from traditional web search engines. Instead of relying mainly on indexed websites, Facebook can use public content created inside its own social ecosystem.

This could make Facebook more useful for questions where people want opinions, experiences, local recommendations, product discussions, community feedback, or cultural context.

At the same time, AI-generated answers based on public posts may also raise questions about accuracy, freshness, and how well user-generated content is interpreted. Public posts can contain useful experiences, but they may also include outdated, incomplete, or misleading claims.

Meta Continues Adding AI Features Across Facebook

The AI Mode launch is part of a wider push to bring more AI features into Facebook.

In recent months, Meta has introduced AI-powered creator tools, profile photo features, Marketplace assistance, and content creation tools. The company is now extending that AI push into search, one of the core ways users find information inside the platform.

With AI Mode, Meta is not only adding another AI feature to Facebook. It is also changing how public social content can be searched, summarized, and surfaced inside the app.
